Pinball FX 2 Thornament

Zen Studios has announced the arrival of another tournament on Pinball FX 2. The "Thornament 2012" sees players to get the highest score on the Thor table and the tournament will run until March 2nd. The Thor table is part of the "Marvel: Vengeance and Virtue" table pack, so you will need to own this pack to be able to enter.

In order to take part in the tournament, you will need to select the tournament icon in the Pinball FX 2 menu bar. Then, choose the Thornament tournament, and your score will be automatically registered when you've finished your game. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entrants. The prize is a t-shirt from Welovefine.com and a download code for the next (currently unannounced) Zen Studios release.

As with previous tournaments, there will also be prizes for random players. To qualify for one of these, players have to simply complete a full game on the Thor table during the tournament period.

The winners will be notified via a PM to their Gamertag over Xbox LIVE once the tournament ends, but the list of winners will also be posted in the Zen Studios forums.

Next Glimpse At Halo 4 Will Be At London's Toy Fair

Microsoft has been oddly silent regarding Halo 4 in recent months. After the initial reveal trailer shown at E3 little was revealed about the game aside from some small tidbits & concept art shown during the HaloFest celebration at PAX Prime last September. We'll be getting some brand new details surrounding Halo 4 at the upcoming Toy Fair in London England, of all places.

We're not expecting MS to reveal any gameplay footage or details at the fair. Instead new character and vehicle designs will be unveiled by various toy manufacturers. In a teaser image revealed by Microsoft a silhouette of the Warthog is shown against a soft blue & black background.

Could this mark the beginning of an expanded advertising or press campaign? We sure hope so and there is precedent too. The first hands on demos of Halo 3 were shown to select press during the spring of 2007. Let's hope Microsoft and 343 industries choose to repeat this with Halo 4.

Amazon Opening First Retail Store

Amazon is planning to open a store in the Seattle area this year, breaking away from the online world, according to reports from Bloomberg and GoodEReader.com.
Amazon’s first brick-and-mortar location would sell pricier merchandise for its tablet computers, the Kindle e-reader and Kindle Fire. The store will be a test run for Amazon to see if creating a chain of retail outlet stores would be profitable, the Associated Press reported. If it takes off, the company could use it as a way to make up for declines in profits due to manufacturing costs of the Kindle Fire.


According to reports from GoodEReader.com, Amazon hired a designer to work on the store’s look and is hoping to open it by the holiday shopping season. Amazon’s main headquarters are located in Seattle, a city known for its tech savvy market.
“It reminds people that Amazon is out there,” said Rob Enderle, an analyst with Enderle Group, MSNBC reported. He pointed out that both Apple and Microsoft have opened retail stores, and Apple has seen a huge success due to it.


Sources told GoodEReader.com Amazon doesn’t intend to open a huge store “with thousands of square feet,” and will be modeling it after a boutique. The store will be stocked with their entire Kindle line, along with accessories such as cases, screen protectors and USB adapters.
One of the advantages to Amazon opening retail stores could be that some items can be picked up immediately rather than waiting for shipping once they’re purchased online, the AP reported. Still, Amazon’s store won’t be nearly as big as Barnes & Noble, the book retailer that now offers the Nook e-reader.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview can be yours February 29

Beta testers, get ready: Windows 8 is coming on Leap Day. The first public beta release that is, which keeps it on track for an October release. My colleague Joe Wilcox details the timeline in this post on Windows 8, which hints at Microsoft's announced date -- calling it "six or more weeks later" than the early January release of Windows 7's public beta. I'd say he was pretty close.
Microsoft is celebrating the release of the Customer Preview with an event in Barcelona, Spain on February 29, which is being held there to coincide with Mobile World Congress, also taking place during that week.

That Microsoft is using MWC as its platform to launch a traditionally desktop OS reinforces how important the Redmond, Wash. company sees a merger of its desktop and mobile efforts. I won't be shocked if the majority of the presentation has a decidedly mobile feel to it.
Despite Microsoft being a little later in its public release than Windows 7 was, the company still has six months to work out the beta bugs before a release to manufacturing in August.
If it can make that August time frame, Microsoft could leverage the back-to-school shopping season by giving OEMs the opportunity to offer guaranteed upgrades to consumers purchasing PCs during that time (which traditionally occur over the summer). Microsoft could also opt to include the Consumer Preview on these machines, but it seems that an arrangement along the lines of the former is more likely.
This will prevent the bastardization of PC purchases over the summer months. It also solves the issue of missing the back-to-school season, and holdouts. And the most important aspect of making that August RTM goal? An October release, and Windows 8 on computers for the holidays.
With an insurgent Apple figuring out ways to sell more and more Macs each quarter, getting Windows 8 into partners' hands for the second biggest computing buying season of the year is pretty darn important.
We'll monitor Mobile World Congress for Microsoft's announcement, and will have a first look at the Consumer Preview as soon as we can get our hands on it. Stay tuned.

The Simpsons Arcade Confirmed, Priced, & Dated

Some great news was announced by Konami today, confirming what had seemed evident a while ago: The Simpsons Arcade is coming to XBLA. Joining other classic ports like Sonic and X-Men, the game is being re-released for the arcade market by Backbone Entertainment, and guess what? It's coming out this Friday, February 3rd.

Why the game isn't waiting for a Wednesday like other XBLA titles isn't known, but who's complaining? The game has been priced at 800 MSP. You'll be able to play as different members of the titular family in four-player online co-op and also experience new game modes, new bonus content like a Japanese version of the game, and other menu goodies like classic posters and character bios.

Bungie handing over Halo community services to 343 in March

As of March 31, 2012, Bungie will no longer host any Halo services on Bungie.net. Current Halo data will be transferred to 343 and, at that time, "all live Halo data will be managed by 343 Industries, and Bungie will no longer be able to update game stats and player service records, to host new user generated content, or to operate the Bungie Pro service." Using a peculiar bit of language, Bungie notes that "any replacement functionality" will be hosted by Halo Waypoint on halo.xbox.com. Notice that Bungie doesn't mention whether or not such functionality will be replaced, though it seems unlikely that Microsoft would allow Halo's community features to disappear. They are, after all, a hallmark of the franchise. Because really, what's the point of playing Halo if you can't show off how awesome you are.

Epic Games Comments on Xbox 720

The topic regarding next generation - especially regarding the Xbox 360 successor - has been heated up in recent weeks. Epic Games, the developer behind the Gears of War series and creator of the Unreal Engine, has commented on the Xbox 720. Speaking to VentureBeat, Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney stated that the company are investing heavily with their engine, as well as game development for the next generation of 'console technology and games': "With every console transition, people ask if there will be another console transition or another successful console platform. We are betting big that there will be. If you look at games like Call of Duty and Gears of War, it's clear that console is the pinnacle of the gaming experience. so we are investing heavily with our engine and game development efforts for the next generation of console technology and games. But at the same time, we actually see this wonderful thing happening where the mobile platform and web platforms are getting to the point where they can run a AAA game. One consistent game engine technology can run across console, PC, mobile and web games. We're really happy with that position. It lets game developers target lots of different platforms. We have shipped Infinity Blade of iOS. We have announced a new game Fortnite for an entirely different audience, more casual. It appeals to a wider audience than a hardcore game like Gears of War. We are branching out, but we tie it all together with AAA production values."

Furthermore, Sweeney said: "The longevity of this console generation has been a mixed blessing. On the game side, it's been really great for our business. We have been able to ship three Gears of War games on the same generation of hardware, each one with dramatic improvements over the last and a two to three-year development cycle. So it's been a very good thing for a game business today. With each new title, there is a bigger and bigger Xbox 360 installed base of users, so the games can sell more. On the other hand, it gets harder to generate the same excitement from the same hardware. That is when the new hardware is justified. But then you reset the installed base to zero and it's a lot harder to sell a lot of games again. So you should only replace the hardware when you can make a dramatic leap in quality, not just 2X or 3X. It has to be huge and fundamentally new. If you create awesome technology for the wrong platform, then nobody will ever adopt it. Epic in general has always tried to be really savvy on the business side. We look at the business models and changing trends and try to stay on top of them. If you look at Epic, we began as a shareware game company in the 1990s making really tiny games. Then we pulled together into one huge team and created the first Unreal game. At that point, we needed to build a huge game to compete with the likes of id Software. We changed our company dramatically to do that. Around 2004, we decided the game industry's sweet spot was moving to consoles. So we made the transition from a PC game company to a console game company with Gears of War. Now we see new changes afoot with the move to mobile and web gaming with Adobe Flash. So we put together business relationships with Apple and Adobe and other folks to do what we need for the future." Epic Games had previously showcased their next generation engine in action with Samaritan demo during 2011.
