Kinect coming to laptops!

The Daily got to see some of this technology first hand on what it thinks were Asus laptops. Intel's CES 2012 press conference featured a stage re-enactment of a similar Kinect-like idea on a laptop, shooting a virtual catapult in a game.

The real question here is, who's going to use this?

For those not able to easily type, a motion-control camera could be useful. Maybe motions combined with keyboard controls could add touch-like gesture vocabulary to a hinged device like a laptop in a more logical/ergonomic way than, say, a touch screen. Gaming, media- and application-switching controls, and universal access for disabled individuals are the three uses that The Daily's Matt Hickey discusses. I agree with the latter the most, but I'm skeptical as to how much I'd use motion otherwise.

My biggest concern would be with the sensitivity radius. The Kinect camera on the Xbox 360 needs several feet of space in order to register movement, although third-party peripherals can trick out the sensitivity to be a bit closer. Does this modified version of the Kinect technology improve on its range and accuracy? Kinects can also be finicky with light sensitivity, which makes me wonder if this would be a problem outdoors. Maybe I'd reach and grab videos and other objects in a virtual manner like "Minority Report." Still, based on my experiences with Kinect, accuracy could be an issue for fine movement controls such as video editing (or, any sort of virtual touch-pad analog). A touch-oriented interface like Metro on Windows 8 is extremely similar to the Xbox 360's new dashboard, suggesting an easy Kinect transition (large icons laid out in a grid), but I'd find using gesture-based Metro in addition to my regular Windows 8 computing to be a weird chore.

What would you use Kinect on a laptop for, other than possibly games? File your suggestions below. I'm a future-minded person, but I'm having a hard time thinking of anything.

Is Jail Breaking Illegal?

Is jail breaking your device illegal? Currently no, but the current DMCA exemptions will expire making it a crime! Shouldnt we be able to buy what we want and do what we want with it? We purchased the item, we now own it. With the DMCA expiring you will never truly own any electronic device again, you would be more of a Co-Owner that owns only 49% of the share of the device because all the rights to do anything to the device are not upto you and can end up landing you in jail.

The Problem – Smartphones, tablets, and video game consoles are powerful computers with lots of untapped potential. Yet many of these devices are set up to run only software that’s been approved by the manufacturer.  Modifying a device to run independent software – known as jailbreaking – is important to programmers, enthusiasts, and users. But jailbreaking creates legal uncertainty. Some device manufacturers claim that jailbreaking violates Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which carries stiff penalties.
The Solution – EFF is asking the U.S. Copyright Office to declare that jailbreaking does not violate the DMCA, and we need your help. In 2010, the Copyright Office said jailbreaking smartphones doesn’t violate the DMCA.  This year, we’re asking them to renew that exemption (otherwise it will expire) and expand it to cover tablets. We’re also asking for a new exemption to allow jailbreaking of video game consoles.
How You Can Help – The Copyright Office needs to hear from people who depend on the ability to jailbreak to write, use, and/or tinker with independent software (from useful apps to essential security fixes) for smartphones, tablets, and game consoles. You can submit comments online at this link.
Here are some questions you might want to address in your comments:
  1. Which jailbreaking exemption are you supporting—smartphones/tablets, video game consoles, or both?
  2. What's your background (i.e., are you a developer, hobbyist, academic, independent researcher, user, etc.)?
  3. What device do you want to ensure you have the legal authority to jailbreak?
  4. Please explain why you want to jailbreak this device. What limitations do you face if you aren't able to jailbreak it? Is there software you couldn't run, computing capabilities you wouldn't have, cool things you couldn’t do, etc.?
  5. If you’re a developer, did an online application store or console manufacturer reject your app or game? If so, what reasons did they give?
  6. Is there anything else you want to tell the Copyright Office?
Concrete examples will help show the Copyright Office why they should renew and expand the exemptions for jailbreaking. Send your comments to the Copyright Office at http://www.copyright.gov/1201/comment-forms/. Where the form says “Comment number(s) of proposed classes of works to which you are responding,” enter a “3” if you’re writing about game consoles or a “5” if you’re writing about smartphones or tablets. You might consider also entering a "4" to submit your comments in support of an exemption request proposed by the Software Freedom Law Center to allow jailbreaking of "personal computing devices."
Comments are due by February 10 at 5 PM Eastern Time.  After you send comments to the Copyright Office, please also send a copy of your comments to dmca-comments@eff.org so that we can see what people are saying.
We also encourage you to sign this petition.

More Problems for Infinity Ward and Call of Duty Elite

If you purchased the Call of Duty DLC maps that came out this week you might be disappointed to find that the maps will only work on the Elite profile and not for all profiles on the console. This is against what the download terms and conditions state "You can use this item on the first Xbox 360 console you downloaded it to. Access to this item will also be granted to all users on this first console."
I am sure they will fix this issue but this is just another issue frustrating Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 players. This after many players getting their stats reset or account banned because of the "prestige token glitch".

Activision has yet to release a response to the issue.

Xbox 720 Will Be Six Times as Powerful as Current Gen

The next Xbox will ship to retailers in late October or early November of next year with six times the processing power of the Xbox 360, sources close to the project have told IGN. Following initial reports from tech blogs Fudzilla and SemiAccurate, our sources have confirmed that mass production of the system's GPU will indeed begin by the end of 2012 but will not, however, be based on AMD's 7000 series Southern Islands GPU. Instead, the processor will be derived from the 6000 series, which was introduced last year. More specifically, it will be akin to the Radeon HD 6670, which offers support for DirectX11, multidisplay output, 3D and 1080p HD output. The chip currently has a market price of upwards of $79.99.

In real terms, the Xbox 720's raw graphics processing power is expected to be six times that of the Xbox 360 and will yield 20-percent greater performance than Nintendo's forthcoming console, the Wii U.

Developers are likely to receive development kits based on the system's final configuration in August. Projected pricing for the console was not provided.

Thanks to IGN for the quick write up!

Rumor: Next Xbox contains Blu-ray, anti-used system

An industry source has told Kotaku that Microsoft’s next Xbox will contain Blu-ray as its disc technology, and that it’ll introduce Kinect 2; and that it’s to contain some kind of anti-used game technology. Such support would be a substantial data storage upgrade over 360′s current DVD model, which can only support up to 9Gb max. Blu-ray, on the other hand, can support up to 25Gb on a single-layer disc, and up to 50Gb on dual-layer. Previous rumors peg the system to also ship with DVR functionality. The source from the Kotaku report implied that Microsoft plans to incorporate an anti-used game application into the next Xbox. However, information on how such a scheme would be administered is unknown at this time. Another chatterer has told Kotaku the next-generation of Kinect sensors will ship with the console, and that motion sensor will contain its own on-board processor – tech which was originally planned for the first iteration of Kinect. The firm is also supposedly making the controller smaller than the one used with Xbox 360. Add all of these rumors to yesterday’s, which stated the next Xbox would contain six times the processing power of 360, and you have a broader picture of what “Xbox 720″ is rumored to include under the hood. Maybe.

Microsoft Planning To Ditch MSP *RUMOR*

Microsoft’s proprietary virtual currency system, Microsoft Points, will be phased out by the end of the year, according to a source with knowledge of the company’s decision. The change will affect developers for Windows Phone, the Zune marketplace and Xbox Live.
By the end of 2012, all transactions will be based on the region set on the purchasing account and real money will be used to purchase all Windows Phone content. The move puts the Windows Phone Marketplace in line with the purchasing practices used in the App Store and the Android Market.
When asked Microsoft declined to provide further information, with a Microsoft spokesperson responding with “we do not comment on rumors or speculation.”
Mobile developers that have publishing agreements with Microsoft are being warned to plan their upcoming downloadable content (DLC) and in-app purchases in accordance with the change. Customers with existing Microsoft Points balances will have them converted into their local currency after the switch.
Microsoft Points are currently used to purchase games and media content on Xbox Live, the Zune Marketplace, the PC and Windows Phone, but the system isn’t used universally. On Xbox Live, the prices for full games are listed in dollars, but downloadable content is purchased with Points. On Windows Phone, apps are priced in dollars, but users can make in-app purchases with Points. Windows Phone users can also use Microsoft Points to buy accessories for their Xbox Live avatars and purchase Points directly from their phones.
While the decision to eliminate Microsoft Points may seem to be a surprising move, Microsoft has been gradually introducing cash purchases to Xbox Live, the most popular platform where Points are used. It makes sense for the company to move to a single cash-based payment system, as it brings it in line with its app market competitors and eliminates a consistent criticism of the system — that the Points to dollar conversion ratio is not only confusing, but it forces consumers to purchase more Points than they actually need. The smallest amount of Points that a consumer can purchase at one time is 400, or $5 worth.

Pinball FX 2 Ghost Rider Tournament

With the "Vengeance and Virtue" DLC tables released for Pinball FX 2 last year came a Ghost Rider table. For those of you looking for a challenge (you know, like walking around with your head on fire), this tournament may interest you. Kicking off over the weekend and running until Friday, the 27th, is a Ghost Rider table tournament organized by the folks at ZEN Studios.

The scoring and official rules are similar to past tournaments that ZEN has held: simply have the highest score by the end of the week and you win the Nicolas Cage-free Ghost Rider t-shirt pictured below, as well as the next DLC table free from the developers. As of writing, I found that the current high score is only...let's see...ah, 25 billion or so.

Okay, so clearly you'd have to be really, really good to win that. Luckily for us normal folks, ZEN Studios will also be giving out prizes to people randomly, simply for finishing a round of the Ghost Rider table (via the in-game Tournament menu option) before the 27th.

Microsoft warns of fake Halo 4 beta invites

Microsoft has warned consumers that any websites claiming to be offering access to a Halo 4 beta are fakes. David Ellis of 343 Industries said on Twitter: "If you see a page claiming to allow you to sign up for a Halo 4 beta be advised, IT'S A FAKE." Microsoft is yet to announce any official plans regarding a beta for the game, which is due for release later this year on Xbox 360, but we wouldn't be surprised if there was one. Crackdown buyers were granted access to Halo 3's beta, while Halo: ODST purchasers gained access to Halo Reach's beta. Microsoft UK's Xbox entertainment director Stephen McGill has said that "one of the key things with Halo 4 is going back to what made it amazing for people playing the first Halo."

Dont Stop Now, Keep up the Fight

With SOPA and PIPA both haulted do forget about Net Neutrality!
Net Neutrality has been going on for a lot longer than SOPA and PIPA but took a back seat.

P.I.P.A. (PROTECT IP Act) has also been postponed!

Message from Mozilla.org:

Great news -- this morning, Congressional leaders announced that votes on both the Stop Online Piracy Act and the PROTECT IP Act have been postponed!

Make no mistake -- you made this happen.

This week, more than 13 million people spoke out against these disastrous pieces of legislation, and there is no doubt in anyone's mind that it's your protest and your action that made it happen.

SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is DEAD

Victory! House Majority Leader Eric Cantor has killed SOPA, stopping all action on it. He didn't say why he killed it, but the overwhelming, widespread unpopularity of the bill and the threat of a presidential veto probably had something to do with it.

http://boingboing.net/2012/01/16/sop...medium=twitter

http://thehill.com/blogs/hillicon-va...ensus-is-found

The bill does have a chance of being resurrected, but with the incredibly high opposition, that is unlikely.

The fight is still not over yet. The Senate version of the bill, the PROTECT IP Act or PIPA, is still going strong. This one is less severe but it still threatens the well being of the Internet.

Fight To Stop SOPA and PIPA!

You might have noticed some or serveral of your websites blacked out today. This is in protest again the SOPA & PIPA acts. Please read more from one of the leading websites in this protest Wikipedia HERE

Some more info regarding SOPA & PIPA:

The SOPA and PIPA, legislation that have the potential to fundamentally change the Internet.
The end of the Internet as we know it may be right around the corner — but not if the Mozilla Foundation has anything to say about it. The maker of Firefox, a non-profit organization, has launched a campaign to help block the passage of both the ‘Stop Online Piracy Act’ (SOPA) and the ‘Protect IP Act’ (PIPA), each of which may soon go up for a vote in Congress. Those who join the campaign are asked to call their senators and representatives and express their ardent opposition to these bills by this Tuesday.

What are SOPA and PIPA, anyway?

Both PIPA and SOPA aim to crack down on websites that illegally distribute copyrighted material, like movies, songs and TV shows, just as the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) tried to accomplish in the past. What makes them particularly controversial is that they also have the ability to establish a precedent of Internet censorship never before seen in the US, by allowing corporations (copyright holders) and the US government to require Internet service providers to block access to domains they feel infringe on intellectual property rights, to block payments (through direct donations or ad sales) made to suspected sites, or to sue sites (like Google, for instance) that they think don’t do enough to block access to copyright-protected content. This chilling factor is especially true for SOPA, which critics say could establish the “Great Firewall of America,” a reference to the strict censorship placed on online activity in China.

Supporters and critics

Because of the great power SOPA and PIPA give to copyright holders, these bill have strong support from the entertainment industry, including the Motion Picture Association of America and the Recording Industry Association of America, among other major content creators. In the opposite corner are a wide number of technology giants, including Google, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, AOL, LinkedIn and even Microsoft — a long-time proponent of stricter copyright protections.

Other possible consequences of SOPA and PIPA

In the addition to the risk that an incalculable number of innocent websites could find themselves blocked behind an iron curtain — something that could happen simply because a company like Universal or Sony believes a site may be contributing to copyright infringement — critics argue that SOPA and PIPA would fail to stop online piracy because people could still access infringing site by simply typing in their IP address, rather than the domain name. Cybersecurity experts say these bills, if enacted, threaten the very structure of the Internet because the Domain Name System (DNS), which translates domains like “digitaltrends.com” into their corresponding IP addresses, would be tampered with to such an extent that the entire World Wide Web could face a slew of detrimental security risks.

Conclusion

In short: SOPA and PIPA would likely do little to achieve their explicit goals of curbing online piracy. They would give corporations and the US government broad powers to censor the Internet, while at the same time making the entire Web less secure.
SOPA is likely to go up for a vote in the US House of Representatives soon, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is expected to call PIPA up for a vote as soon as next week.
If you believe these pieces of legislation would be detrimental to the Internet we all know and love, join Mozilla’s campaign to block passage of these bills here.
